Winter Fun

Michele and I went for a snowshoe hike in the Fells today. It snowed about 6 inches overnight, so it seemed like a good opportunity. The snow was really powdery and soft and it was nice to get out in the fresh air for a while. We hiked for about two hours.

For some reason we kept going around in circles. It was a little frustrating because although I generally have a good sense of direction, it was hard to read the landmarks with everything covered in snow. We started out following a trail of snowshoe and xc tracks, but it led into a dead end and then we had to decide whether to retrace our steps or to backcountry up a hill and over some giant boulders. We decided to bushwack, and that was quite fun. Oddly enough, we then found ourselves on the trail from which we originally started (the one that dead-ended), but after continuing on it for about thirty minutes we came back to where set off the first time.

It was pretty funny, because we kept passing the same pile of dog poop over and over again. By the third time we were wondering if there was some mystery dog that was walking just ahead of us and leaving poop for us to find, but the sad truth was that we just kept going past the same pile again and again.

Nonetheless, it was still quite fun and so wonderful to be out in the woods. It would have been more interesting to have gone on several different trails, but our circles gave us a safety net - we knew that we would eventually end up back where we started and not get lost.
